Approaching the Presence: A Year for Living Faithfully
Intended as a daily devotional book, the reader will learn something new and important each day. With a daily scripture, I provide ideas and insights from history and interesting places in the world like Petra, the Dead Sea, the Alps, Galilee, Athens, Rome … (One reader referred to it as a “Spiritual Travelogue.”) Historical figures, too, come alive in the text, like Mozart, Epicurus, Plato, Mad King Ludwig, John Wesley, Eratosthenes … probing further the intersection of life, faith and the biblical text for each day. A real bonus for me in writing this book is that I got to write it in partnership with my mother, Diane Jordan, in memory of my father, Monty Jordan.
In The Lord’s Prayer, Jesus prays for God’s Kingdom to come to earth as it is in Heaven. In David Jordan’s inspiring and delightful book, he artfully gives the reader insight on how we can experience a little of heaven each day.
When you begin the book, you won’t want to put it down. Please resist the temptation and read it as intended.
You will have a wonderful year.
– Rep. Ken Goodman, North Carolina Legislature
In “Approaching the Presence: A Year for Living Faithfully,” David Jordan leads us on a year-long journey of discovery, exploring the history, landscapes, characters and stories of the Bible and inviting us into a deeper relationship with God en route. Like a well-seasoned tour guide, Jordan warmly welcomes us into a “land” he knows well and loves deeply, and he draws meaningfully from a treasured collection of personal reflections and anecdotes, and quotes from others who have passed this way before, to enrich our experience. He points out prominent landmarks and tourist destinations, as well as hidden gems overlooked by even experienced travellers. And by the end of our sojourn, we discover that we not only know our Bible better, but even more importantly, we possess fresh insights into ourselves and a more profound awareness of the One in whom “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). I found it to be a delightful excursion… in great company!

With homespun stories and theological reflection, David Jordan brings a daily devotional guide that is both engaging and insightful. His stories will warm you and his insights will challenge you. This will be a year of spiritual reflection that you will long remember.
– Bo Prosser, Coordinator for Missional Congregations, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship
David Jordan’s enthusiasm for the written Word, spiritual depth, teacher’s heart, and understanding of the needs of those who seek connection with the Divine through scripture culminates in this accessible yet powerful guide.
Paying close attention to the biblical text and employing all the senses, David invites the reader to become a pilgrim journeying with scripture by experiencing and reflecting on brief portions in new and profound ways.
The daily Bible readings and “devotional musings” are equally effective as a guide for a brief reflective moment over breakfast before beginning the day, as well as a catalyst for deeper journaling.
Thank you, David, for speaking to head and heart and thereby providing a resource that offers an opportunity for spiritual growth and greater biblical understanding.
