Roger Williams Pt. 2

by Man In Charge

Roger Williams, pt. II

Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts, sanctify Christ as Lord (I Peter 3:14-15).

When forced to flee a second time, Roger Williams, founded what became known as Rhode Island. In 1636, he established a new city on Narragansett Bay he called Providence. And to this new place he welcomed other exiles, like Anne Hutchinson from Massachusetts and many Baptists, Quakers, Jews, Native Americans, and even what he called “Turks” (Muslims). Williams was a man ahead of his time.

He was the first Baptist on American soil and began what is still known today as “The First Baptist Church in America” in Providence, Rhode Island. Thanks to his courageous, progressive, spirit-filled staying power, our country now attempts to embody everything he stood for.

Today, whatever obstacles come your way, remember those who have come before—Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson could have limped off into the sunset and sulked. Instead, they helped to transition history into a new era of respect, understanding, and multiculturalism that serves as the moral, ethical, and spiritual foundation for our nation. So hang in there. Whatever your difficulties, allow them to make you stronger, to make a difference.

 QUOTE FOR TODAY

Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do so with gentleness and reverence (I Peter 3:14-15).
